Net Settlement Windows: How Participants Square Up

Here is a thing that surprises people: even on an instant rail, the banks don't send each other money for every single payment. If they did, they would drown in interbank transfers. Instead they net. Over a window — an hour, a day — the scheme tallies everything that flowed between participants, cancels the offsetting flows, and each participant settles a single net figure. That is the difference between clearing (the payment is instructed and confirmed) and settlement (the money actually moves between the institutions).

Why net, not gross

Imagine Bank A sends Bank B a thousand payments and Bank B sends Bank A nine hundred back. Settling gross means 1,900 interbank movements. Settling net means one: the difference. Netting slashes the number and value of settlement transfers, which reduces liquidity needs and settlement risk. The trade-off is timing — between windows, participants carry exposure to each other, which is why windows are frequent and why some schemes move toward real-time gross settlement for high value.

What a settlement window produces

Running a window is an aggregation: for each participant and each currency, total what they received and what they sent over the window, then net the two. A positive net means the scheme owes them; a negative net means they owe the scheme. The output is a settlement statement — the per-participant figures that the settlement agent uses to move the net amounts, and that each participant reconciles against their own books.

How Kibipay does it

Kibipay lets an operator run a net settlement over a chosen window — the last 24 hours, week, or month of settled payments. It computes each participant's inbound-versus-outbound position per currency, shows the net at a glance (green for owed-to, red for owed-by), and produces a downloadable CSV statement. Each run is stored, so the settlement history is auditable — you can see exactly which window produced which positions.

The bigger point

Netting and settlement are what separate a payment scheme from a payment app. Moving one payment is easy; squaring up thousands of them between many participants, correctly and auditably, is the part that makes a network a network. Settlement windows are where all the individual payments become one clean number per participant — and where the money, finally, actually moves.
