PromptPay transformed how money moves in Thailand by doing something deceptively simple: it let people send funds using a phone number or national ID instead of a bank account number. What PromptPay is
PromptPay is Thailand's instant account-to-account payment service, enabling near-real-time transfers between bank accounts. - An e-wallet ID in some cases.
A central proxy directory resolves the alias to the underlying bank account at the moment of payment. So a sender enters a phone number, the system looks up which bank account it points to, and the money is routed there. The payer never needs to know or store the recipient's actual account details, and the recipient can change the underlying account behind their alias without telling anyone.
This proxy model is why PromptPay took off for government use. When the state wants to pay welfare or tax refunds to citizens, mapping payments to national IDs is far simpler and less error-prone than collecting everyone's bank account numbers. Registration of IDs to accounts made mass government disbursement practical.
The QR standard
PromptPay also drove adoption of a standardized QR code for payments, aligned with the EMVCo QR specification used internationally. A merchant displays a QR code encoding their PromptPay proxy, a customer scans it with their banking app, and the payment routes through PromptPay to the merchant's account. Standardizing on a single interoperable QR meant any bank's app could pay any merchant's QR, avoiding the fragmentation of competing closed QR systems and accelerating cashless acceptance among small merchants.
Cross-border linkages
PromptPay has become a building block for cross-border instant payments in the region. Thailand and Singapore established a linkage connecting PromptPay with Singapore's PayNow, allowing users to send money between the two countries using just a mobile number, with the transfer settling far faster and cheaper than a traditional remittance. This kind of proxy-to-proxy linkage — connecting two national instant schemes so their aliases interoperate — is an emerging model for regional payment integration, and PromptPay has been at its forefront.

The lesson of PromptPay is that the identifier layer can be as important as the rail. The underlying transfers are ordinary instant bank payments; the innovation is in how you address them.

PromptPay's growth was rapid because it solved concrete pain points at once. For individuals, splitting a bill or repaying a friend became as easy as typing a mobile number.
