Phone-First Accounts: Sign Up With Just a Mobile Number

For a huge share of the world, the phone number is the bank account. Mobile-money systems have shown that a single number can anchor an entire financial identity. KibiPay embraces that model with phone-first accounts: you can sign up and start transacting using nothing but a mobile number. No email, no username, no password. This post explains how it works, why it matters, and how your number stays protected.

Why phone-first

Mobile money reached hundreds of millions of people precisely because it dropped the requirement for a traditional bank account and an email address. A phone number is something almost everyone already has and remembers. By letting a number be the root of your KibiPay identity, we make the on-ramp as low as it can possibly be — which is exactly the point of a demo meant to show how modern rails, including Mojaloop-style mobile money, actually behave. For background on how phone numbers act as payment addresses, see aliases and proxy lookups.

How signing up works

The flow could not be shorter:

  1. Enter your mobile number.
  2. Receive a one-time code by text.
  3. Type it back.
  4. Your account exists, funded and ready.

That is the whole thing. The same one-time-code mechanism that powers email sign-in works here over SMS, so there is nothing new to learn. If you would rather use email, or want the option of both, read choosing where your sign-in code lands.

Your number becomes a payable identity

Once you sign up with a number, that number can serve as a payment alias — a friendly address people can send money to without knowing any bank details. This is the same idea behind PayID, UPI, and Pix keys around the world: a proxy that resolves to your account. When someone pays your number, KibiPay looks it up, finds your wallet, and routes the money. We explain the resolution step in how the orchestrator picks your rail.

One number, one identity

A phone number is unique, which makes it a great anchor for identity. KibiPay enforces that a given number maps to exactly one account, so there is no ambiguity about who you are paying. That uniqueness guarantee is worth understanding on its own; we cover it in one phone, one identity.

Privacy: your number is not on display

Signing up with a number does not mean broadcasting it. In the public network directory, other users see your chosen handle and display name — never your raw mobile number or any account digits. Someone can pay you by looking up your handle; they never see the phone number underneath. This deliberate separation is core to how we designed the product, detailed in privacy by design.

Verifying you own the number

Because the one-time code is sent to the number itself, completing sign-up already proves you control it. That proof is what turns a raw number into a verified alias — one KibiPay is confident actually belongs to you. Verification matters for trust between payers and payees, and we unpack it in verified aliases.

Great for demos and for developers

Phone-first sign-up makes KibiPay a realistic stand-in for mobile-money flows. If you are building or evaluating a product that targets markets where phone numbers dominate, you can model the exact experience your users will have: enter a number, get a code, transact. Create several numbered test users, list them in the directory, and send payments between them to see cross-rail routing in action.

Get started with a number

Adding an email later

Starting phone-first does not lock you in. You can add and verify an email address afterwards, giving yourself a second way to receive sign-in codes and a second alias people can reach you by. Both aliases point to the same account, so nothing is duplicated — you simply gain flexibility. This mirrors how many real-world users graduate from a bare mobile-money number to a fuller financial identity over time, and it means a phone-first start never becomes a ceiling on what your account can do.

All you need is a phone that can receive a text. Open the KibiPay app, punch in your mobile number, enter the code we send, and you will have a funded demo wallet and a payable identity in under a minute. Then follow the two-minute walkthrough to send your first payment, and explore more guides on the KibiPay blog.

See it in motion
